While browsing through forbes magazine today I read an article which indicated news and major media publications are seeing as much as 50% declines in their advertising over 2008.  That’s astounding. What’s more interesting is where did the business go? Did the business owners all decide to cut back on media advertising 50%? Did they cutback altogether? 

While it’s a good guess many business have cut back on advertising, I am more inclined to beleive more advertisers are going with more cost effective advertising via the internet.  Mass media marketing is great, tried and true, but when cash is tight the web is gonna win everytime.

Those who are committed to marketing online and also presenting themselves well with consistently updated content will pull through the economic choas.  The logic here is simple.  The internet is cheaper to advertise on.  More and more users are using the internet, even grandmas and grandpas!  All of which want to sell or buy something at some point in their online journey.

I think the media marketing decline indicates that the business is going on the web.  If you own a business you flat out need a website. With the dramatic rise in usage a plain jane website is not going to do the trick any more.
